Classic FM wählte Philipp Schupelius im März 2024 zu einem der „30 spannendsten Nachwuchsmusiker der Welt“. Der 2003 in Berlin geborene, vielfach ausgezeichnete Cellist begeisterte sein Publikum als Solist und Kammermusiker bereits auf zahlreichen europäischen Bühnen. Mit Leidenschaft widmet er sich besonderen Konzertformaten, Themenkonzerten und der Verbindung verschiedener Kunstformen zu einem Konzerterlebnis. 2023 schloss er sein Bachelorstudium und 2024 sein Masterstudium an der Kronberg Academy in der Klasse von Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt ab. Seit 2024 setzt er seine Ausbildung dort im Programm Professional Studies bei Antje Weithaas fort. Das Studium wird durch das Sodalitas-Patronat ermöglicht.

Im August 2023 gewann Philipp Schupelius den Deutschen Musikwettbewerb in Bonn. Der Preis ist unter anderem mit einer CD-Aufnahme beim Leipziger Label GENUIN verbunden. 2024 erschien dort das Album „Driven“, das Philipp Schupelius gemeinsam mit der Kammerphilharmonie Metamorphosen Berlin und der Pianistin Yukino Kaihara einspielte. Die Aufnahme stand zweifach auf der Shortlist des OPUS KLASSIK. Bereits im September 2023 erschien seine im Beethoven-Haus Bonn aufgenommene Debüt-CD „Pau! A Tribute to Casals“. Darauf erkundet Philipp Schupelius musikalisch die Gedankenwelt des Jahrhundertcellisten und Friedensaktivisten Pablo Casals, dessen 50. Todestag 2023 begangen wurde.

Bereits mit 17 Jahren wurde Philipp Schupelius mit dem Discovery Award der International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) ausgezeichnet. Im Oktober 2022 erhielt er den Boris Pergamenschikow Grant und im gleichen Monat den Fanny-Mendelssohn-Förderpreis. Außerdem wurde er Ende 2021 mit dem First Great Award des Manhattan Music Competition und 2022 mit der Silbermedaille des Eurovision Young Musicians Contest ausgezeichnet. Er ist mehrfacher erster Bundespreisträger von Jugend musiziert. Seit der Saison 2024/25 ist Philipp Schupelius Debut Artist im Nikolaisaal Potsdam. Philipp Schupelius konnte von außergewöhnlichen Musikerinnen und Musikern lernen. Seit 2024 studiert er im Rahmen der Professional Studies bei Antje Weithaas. Prägend war zuvor vor allem Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, dessen Student er sechs Jahre lang war und bei dem er sein Bachelor- und Masterstudium absolvierte. Zuvor wurde er im Pre-College der Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin von Ulrich Voss unterrichtet. Wichtigen Rat erhielt er von Justin Pearson, Daniel Hope und Anssi Karttunen. Wesentlich war auch die Teilnahme an der Menuhin String Academy in Gstaad bei Ivan Monighetti im Jahr 2018. In Meisterkursen konnte er unter anderem mit den inzwischen verstorbenen Ausnahmecellisten Lynn Harrell und Wolfgang Boettcher arbeiten. Darüber hinaus erhielt er Unterricht von Jens Peter Maintz, Daniel Geiss und Frans Helmerson. 2017 debütierte Philipp Schupelius mit Tschaikowskys Rokoko-Variationen und den Bergischen Symphonikern; das Konzert wurde vom WDR übertragen. Seitdem trat er solistisch und als Kammermusiker auf zahlreichen europäischen Bühnen auf. Im Herbst 2023 spielte er das Festkonzert zum 50. Todestag Pablo Casals’ im Beethoven-Haus Bonn. Mit Daniel Hope an der Violine und Philip Dukes an der Viola musizierte er unter anderem beim Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. Dort brachte er 2024 gemeinsam mit dem Percussionisten Leon Lorenz das eigens für sie komponierte Werk „Middle Eastern Children“ von Fazıl Say zur Uraufführung. Die Hoelzer v. Borckesche Musikstiftung unterstützt Philipp Schupelius seit 2020. Seit 2021 ist er zudem Stipendiat der Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. Von 2017 bis 2019 wurde er durch die Jürgen-Ponto-Stiftung gefördert. Er war außerdem Stipendiat der Internationalen Musikakademie in Liechtenstein und erhielt bereits 2018 ein Stipendium der Kronberg Academy. Seit Oktober 2021 spielt er gemeinsam mit dem Pianisten Ron Huang für Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Berlin.

In March 2024, Classic FM named Philipp Schupelius one of the “30 Most Exciting Young Musicians in the World”. Born in Berlin in 2003, the multi-award-winning cellist has already captivated audiences as a soloist and chamber musician on numerous European stages. He is particularly passionate about distinctive concert formats, thematic programmes and bringing together different art forms in a single concert experience. In 2023, he completed his Bachelor of Music, followed by his Master of Music in 2024, at the Kronberg Academy in the class of Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. Since 2024, he has continued his training there in the Professional Studies programme with Antje Weithaas. His studies are made possible through the Sodalitas Patronage. In August 2023, Philipp Schupelius won First Prize at the German Music Competition (Deutscher Musikwettbewerb) in Bonn. The prize includes a CD recording with the Leipzig-based label GENUIN. In 2024, the label released the album “Driven”, recorded by Philipp Schupelius with the Metamorphosen Berlin Chamber Orchestra and pianist Yukino Kaihara. The recording was twice shortlisted for the OPUS KLASSIK. His debut album, “Pau! A Tribute to Casals”, had already been released in September 2023. Recorded at the Beethoven-Haus Bonn, the album explores the world of ideas of the legendary cellist and peace activist Pablo Casals, whose 50th anniversary of death was commemorated in 2023. Before that, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt was a particularly formative influence: Schupelius studied with him for six years and completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees under his guidance. He previously studied with Ulrich Voss in the Pre-College programme at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. He also received valuable advice from Justin Pearson, Daniel Hope and Anssi Karttunen. Another important experience was his participation in the Menuhin String Academy in Gstaad, where he studied with Ivan Monighetti in 2018. In masterclasses, he had the opportunity to work with the late distinguished cellists Lynn Harrell and Wolfgang Boettcher, as well as with Jens Peter Maintz, Daniel Geiss and Frans Helmerson. In 2017, Philipp Schupelius made his solo debut performing Tchaikovsky’s “Rococo Variations” with the Bergische Symphoniker; the concert was broadcast by WDR. Since then, he has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician on numerous stages throughout Europe. In autumn 2023, he performed the gala concert marking the 50th anniversary of Pablo Casals’ death at the Beethoven-Haus Bonn. He has also performed at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival alongside violinist Daniel Hope and violist Philip Dukes. At the same festival in 2024, he and percussionist Leon Lorenz gave the world premiere of Fazıl Say’s “Middle Eastern Children”, a work composed especially for them. The Hoelzer v. Borckesche Music Foundation has supported Philipp Schupelius since 2020. Since 2021, he has also been a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes). From 2017 to 2019, he was supported by the Jürgen Ponto Foundation. He was also a scholarship holder of the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein and received a scholarship from the Kronberg Academy as early as 2018. Since October 2021, he has performed together with pianist Ron Huang for Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Berlin.
